Canterbury Shaker Village is a historic site and museum in Canterbury, New Hampshire, United States. It was one of a number of Shaker communities founded in the 19th century. It is one of the most intact and authentic surviving Shaker community sites, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1993. [2] [4] [5]
The biggest attraction in Canterbury is the Shaker Village, established in 1792. At its peak in the 1850s, over 300 people lived, worked and worshiped in 100 buildings on 4,000 acres (16 km 2 ). They made their living by farming, selling seeds, herbs and herbal medicines; and by manufacturing textiles, pails, brooms and other products.
Maryland Route 650 (MD 650) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland.Known as New Hampshire Avenue for most of its length, the state highway runs 25.89 mi (41.67 km) from Eastern Avenue at the Washington, D.C. border north to MD 108 in Etchison.
In 1960, it designated the land for a new to be named St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. On June 2, 1960, Reverend E. Carl Lyon, Assistant Pastor at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Chevy Chase, D.C., met with Archbishop Patrick O'Boyle (later Cardinal), and the Archbishop appointed Fr. Lyon to be the pastor of the new parish. [1]
The congregation purchased the property in Silver Spring in 1986 and commissioned a church building in the Kozak Baroque style. That same year the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl occurred and the church was dedicated in memory of the victims. The church building was finished the following year and it was consecrated on April 24, 1988.
New Hampshire currently has 24 National Historic Landmarks; the most recent addition was Lucknow (Castle in the Clouds) in Moultonborough added in 2024. [1] Three of the sites—Canterbury Shaker Village, Harrisville Historic District, and the MacDowell Colony—are categorized as National Historic Landmark Districts.
