Big Creek (Big Creek Flats in the 1870s; Manzanita Park in 1902; until 1926, Cascada) [3] is a small census-designated place [4] in Fresno County, California, located in the Sierra Nevada on the north bank of Big Creek. It lies at an elevation of 4,984 feet (1,519 m) above sea level. [2] Its last population count was 175.
First camping took place in October 1959, and the first summer camp took place in July 1964. It was renamed to Wente Scout Reservation in 1978 in honor of San Francisco Council Board Member and Bank of America President Carl F. Huntington Lake (formerly, Basin) [2] is an unincorporated community in Fresno County, California. [1] It is located on the west end of Huntington Lake 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Big Creek, [2] at an elevation of 7027 feet (2142 m). [1] The Basin post office opened in 1913, the name was changed to Huntington Lake in 1916. [2]
The camp was originally named Camp Huntington, with 39 Boy Scouts attending the first weekly session. [4] By the mid-1990s, the camp was hosting over 3,000 Scouts each summer. [5] In September, 2020, Camp Kern was fully engulfed in the Creek Fire. Most of the camp's structures suffered serious damage or were completely destroyed. [6] [7]
