A Girl Asleep (Dutch: Slapend meisje), also known as A Woman Asleep, A Woman Asleep at Table, and A Maid Asleep, [1] is a painting by the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, created c. 1657. [2] It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and may not be lent elsewhere under the terms of the donor's bequest.
It depicts two women in a bed, gazing at each other. The white sheets of the bed contrast with a red bedspread and with the headboard and wall behind. The disembodied heads of the women face each other, their bodies concealed beneath mountains of bedclothes. The painting is suffused by a warm glow, perhaps the rosy morning light, or a gas lamp.

Her left hand grasps her gold chain; the right hand is extended before her. She wears a lace-trimmed cap, a black silk dress, a ruff, and lace wristbands. To the left is a coat-of-arms, which has been repainted.
