In 1663 the Modena version of the painting was displayed in the Doge's Palace in Venice alongside similar female portraits by Titian and Annibale Carracci. [1] The finery worn by the subject indicates she is a gentlewoman. [1] The gesture of her right hand towards her belt or girdle has been interpreted as a symbol of virginity. [1]
Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430 – 26 November 1516) [1] was a Venetian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian painters. His father was Jacopo Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini (who was more highly regarded than Giovanni during his lifetime, although the reverse is true today), and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna.
The development of fast painting techniques called prestezza allowed him to produce many works while engaged on large projects and to respond to growing demands from clients. [28] This, and his use of assistants, enabled Tintoretto ultimately to produce a greater number of paintings for the Venetian state than any of his competitors. [29]
The third known image of Catherine, also by Bellini, is visible in his painting Miracle of the Cross at the Bridge of S. Lorenzo, from 1500, kneeling in the company of her manor house. Her attitude is very similar to that of the painting from the museum in Budapest. Common iconographic elements appear in all the three images.
