Oneida (/ oʊ ˈ n aɪ d ə /) is a city in Madison County in the U.S. state of New York. It is located west of Oneida Castle (in Oneida County ) and east of Wampsville . The population was 10,329 at the 2020 census , [ 2 ] down from 11,390 in 2010 .
Oneida Lake is the largest lake entirely within New York state, with a surface area of 79.8 square miles (207 km 2). [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The lake is located northeast of Syracuse and near the Great Lakes . It feeds the Oneida River , a tributary of the Oswego River , which flows into Lake Ontario .

Oneida Castle (Oneida: tkanaˀalóhaleˀ [2]) is a village in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 586 at the 2020 census. The village is in the northwestern corner of the town of Vernon. Oneida Castle is east of the city of Oneida (located in Madison County) and west of the city of Sherrill in New York State.
The cities of Oneida and Sherrill are located along the lower part of the creek. The creek forms part of the boundary between Madison and Oneida counties before entering Oneida Lake near the community of South Bay in the Town of Lenox, located just south of the mouth of the creek. Verona Beach State Park is located north of the mouth.
The Utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties in Central New York anchored by the cities of Utica and Rome (both in Oneida County). As of the 2020 census, the MSA had a population of 292,264.
