Clinton is a town in Hunterdon County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey.It is located on the South Branch of the Raritan River in the Raritan Valley region.As of the 2020 United States census, the town's population was 2,773, [9] an increase of 54 (+2.0%) from the 2010 census count of 2,719, [18] [19] which in turn reflected an increase of 87 (+3.3%) from the 2,632 counted in the 2000 census. Clinton was first settled in 1654 as a part of Lancaster after the land was deeded by Sachem Sholan of the Nashaway in 1643. [2] It was officially incorporated as a separate town on March 14, 1850, [3] and named after the DeWitt Clinton Hotel in New York, a favorite place of the town's founders, Erastus Brigham Bigelow and his brother Horatio. The current boundaries of the town of Clinton were set in 1821. The general area was part of a British land grant in 1697 known as the Great Nine Partners Patent.In 1734, a soil survey was done in the Great Nine Partners patent running in 1 1/2 mile wide strips from the Hudson River east through the patent.
