Maui Jim is an American sunglasses manufacturer based in Peoria, Illinois. [ 2 ] Founded in Lahaina, Hawaii , in 1980, the company designs, develops, and manufactures a wide variety of sunglasses marketed under the eponymous brand name.
The Makaha Sons of Niʻihau recorded No Kristo in 1976 and released several more albums, including Hoʻoluana, Kahea O Keale, Keala, Makaha Sons of Niʻihau and Mahalo Ke Akua. The group became Hawaii's most popular contemporary traditional group with breakout albums 1984's Puana Hou Me Ke Aloha and its follow-up, 1986's Hoʻola.
The name was changed to the Makaha Sons after Israel Kamakawiwoʻole went solo. [3] The band started its career as an opening act at a small nightclub called Uptown Yokos. The group has changed members several times, [4] with the original version of the band ending with Skippy Kamakawiwoʻole died of a heart attack in 1982. [1]
Mākaha was the site of the Mākaha International Surfing Championships 1954–1971. During the '60s, Fred Hemmings won the championship four times. Surfing is sometimes recognized as starting in Mākaha in the early 1950s, even though it has most likely been utilized as a surfing spot for Native Hawaiians for hundreds of years.
