Missionary ventures to the country launched in the 16th century resulted in the death of a number of missionaries. In 1516, Trinidad was named a territorial abbey, which was the first Catholic structure in Trinidad and Tobago. This Territorial abbey ceased to exist in 1650. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic cathedral in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. [1] It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain. Construction started in 1816 and it was completed in 1851. [2] The same year the cathedral was given the honorary status of a minor basilica. [3]
