Longview is a city in Cowlitz County, Washington, United States. It is the principal city of the Longview, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area , which encompasses all of Cowlitz County. Longview's population was 37,818 at the time of the 2020 census , [ 3 ] making it the most populous city in Cowlitz County.
It was given to the city by founder R. A. Long in early 1923, and designed by Long's architects of choice, Hoit, Price, and Barnes, of Kansas City. The Monticello Hotel. Built between November 1922 and opening on July 14 of 1923, the "Hotel Monticello" was the first permanent building for the new planned city of Longview.
The building was increasingly used for meetings of various non-profit organizations, blood drives, church services, and wedding receptions. [3] The clubhouse is now owned by the City of Longview and civic and political events are held in the building. [4] [5] Beginning in 2022, the building has been used for summer camps. [6]
In mid-1947 Tom Young and Associates purchased the building from Conrad Hilton and renamed the facility "Hotel Longview". [8] In June, 1954, Earl Hollandsworth and Lee Travis bought the hotel. In addition to the Longview building they also owned the Carlton Hotel in Tyler and Hotel Marshall in Marshall. [9]
[1] [2] Several tenants at a nearby office building proposed the construction of a dedicated bridge for squirrels as early as 1960 and received approval from the Longview City Council on February 28, 1963. [3] [4] The bridge was named the "Nutty Narrows" by councilwoman Bess LaRivere, likely as a reference to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
