Map showing old counties of Trinidad. Caroni County was a historic county of Trinidad and Tobago. It occupies 557 km 2 (215 sq mi) in the west central part of the island of Trinidad, the larger island in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It lies south and southwest of Saint George County, west of Nariva County and north of Victoria County.
The Caroni River is the largest river in Trinidad and Tobago, running for 40 km (25 mi) [1] from its origins in the Northern Range on the island of Trinidad, through the northern lowlands of the Caroni Plains and enters the Gulf of Paria at the Caroni Swamp.
The Caroni Swamp is a 12,000 acre swamp [3] located on the west coast of the island of Trinidad. It is one of the largest mangrove forest on the island. Caroni Swamp is protected under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. [4]

Caroni was divided into the regions of Couva, Tabaquite–Talparo, Tunapuna, Piarco and the borough of Chaguanas. In 1992, Couva and Tabaquite–Talparo merged to form Couva–Tabaquite–Talparo and Tunapuna and Piarco merged to form Tunapuna–Piarco. Counties and Wards still play a role in revenue collection by the government.
