Melaleuca (/ ˌ m ɛ l ə ˈ lj uː k ə /) is a genus of nearly 300 species of plants in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, commonly known as paperbarks, honey-myrtles, bottlebrushes or tea-trees (although the last name is also applied to species of Leptospermum).
Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is an essential oil with a fresh, camphoraceous odour and a colour that ranges from pale yellow to nearly colourless and clear. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It is derived from the leaves of the tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia , native to southeast Queensland and the northeast coast of New South Wales , Australia.
Melaleuca filifolia, commonly called wiry honey-myrtle, [2] is a plant in the myrtle family Myrtaceae, and is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It is a woody, twiggy shrub with needle-shaped leaves, greenish flower buds, pink " pom-pom " flower heads and spherical clusters of fruits.
Melaleuca thymifolia is a low, spreading shrub which grows to a height of about 1.0–1.5 m (3–5 ft) with grey, corky bark, glabrous foliage and arching branches. Its leaves are arranged in alternating pairs so that they make four rows of leaves along the stem.
The name was later changed to Melaleuca acerosa but this was an illegal name because it had already been used - Melaleuca acerosa G.Don. [6] The name of that species was later changed to Calothamnus quadrifidus. [7] The specific epithet (systena) is from the Ancient Greek word systenos meaning "tapering" [8] referring to the shape of the leaf. [2]

It grows as a spreading tree up to 20 m (70 ft) tall, with its trunk covered by a white, beige and grey thick papery bark.
Melaleuca rigidifolia is a bushy shrub with fibrous bark usually growing to a height of about 3.5 m (10 ft). Its leaves are arranged alternately, 5–19.5 mm (0.2–0.8 in) long and 0.8–2.3 mm (0.03–0.09 in) wide, glabrous and linear, lance-shaped or narrow oval in shape.
