Norman Gardens is bounded by the Bruce Highway to the west, the Yeppoon Road to the north and by Moores Creek (a tributary of the Fitzroy River) to the south.The main Rockhampton campus of the Central Queensland University is in the north-west corner of suburb on the corner of the Bruce Highway and the Yeppoon Road.
The Central Queensland University founded in 1967, has its main campus at Norman Gardens, and is the only Australian university with a campus presence in every mainland state. [8] The city is served by Rockhampton Airport , and Port Alma , located at the south end of the Fitzroy river delta.
Central Queensland includes the Bowen Basin which is rich in high quality coking coal, the Port of Gladstone produces 40% of the state's export earnings, the Fitzroy River is the second-largest river system in Australia and commands significant water resources such as Fairbairn Dam. Gladstone has a significant aluminium smelter.

Later Mackay TAFE was amalgamated into Central Queensland TAFE, which was merged into Central Queensland University (CQU) in 2014. [5] In 2016, the building (known as Building 6) was used for administrative functions on CQU's Mackay City campus. [2]
