Sigma Delta Tau is an American sorority. Jewish students founded it at Cornell University in 1917. In the following list, its active chapters are indicated in bold and its inactive chapters are in italics .
In 1917, Pi Kappa Sigma and Delta Sigma Epsilon joined the association, followed by Theta Sigma Upsilon in 1925, Alpha Sigma Tau in 1926, and Pi Delta Theta in 1931. At the third biennial conference, the name of the association was changed to the Association of Educational Sororities. Later, [when?] the word Educational was changed to Education.
Sigma Tau Delta was founded on December 12, 1922 as the English Club of Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota. A group of professors developed a national constitution and ritual in preparation for expansion as a national organization, with Fadner contributing the Ritual and Owen the original constitution.
