Blackfish is a 2013 American documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. It concerns Tilikum , an orca held by SeaWorld and the controversy over captive orcas . The film premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2013, and was picked up by Magnolia Pictures and CNN Films for wider release.
The film created a new movement, called "The Blackfish Effect", and in 2016 SeaWorld announced it would stop breeding orcas and put an end to all orca performances by 2019, which was largely attributed to the film. A documentary, by its nature, is factual. Blackfish has been conclusively proven to not be factual, and is at best in "based on a true story" territory - I have a serious objection to referring to it as a documentary, and I suspect many others do as well. Neg2led 12:06, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
