The Mount Washington Hillclimb Auto Race, also known as the Climb to the Clouds, is a timed hillclimb auto race up the Mount Washington Auto Road to the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. [1] It is one of the oldest auto races in the country, first run on July 11 and 12, 1904, predating the Indianapolis 500 and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
Organizing a team of six including himself, he and the group climbed and filmed the ascent, over three days, of the difficult South East Ridge of the Thumb. Tom Whittaker (born 1948 in York) was the first disabled person to climb to the summit of Mount Everest. [1] Whittaker's right foot needed to be amputated following a car accident in 1979. Following this serious accident, he regained his strength and continued climbing. He was educated at Idaho State University.
