Infliximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody, sold under the brand name Remicade among others, is a medication used to treat a number of autoimmune diseases. This includes Crohn's disease , ulcerative colitis , rheumatoid arthritis , ankylosing spondylitis , psoriasis , psoriatic arthritis , and Behçet's disease . [ 23 ]
Therapeutic, diagnostic and preventive monoclonal antibodies are clones of a single parent cell. When used as drugs, the International Nonproprietary Names (INNs) end in -mab.
The human anti-chimeric antibody (HACA) can develop in patients undergoing autoimmune disease therapy with the drug infliximab.This drug can cause the patient to develop antibodies to the medicine itself, which are termed HACAs.
Each antibody binds only one specific antigen. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have varied therapeutic uses. It is possible to create a mAb that binds specifically to almost any extracellular target, such as cell surface proteins and cytokines.
Remicade was approved for plaque psoriasis in September 2006. Centocor also markets ReoPro ( abciximab ), a biologic agent indicated as an adjunct to coronary angioplasty ( PTCA ). In 2009, the U.S. FDA approved Simponi , a human monoclonal antibody for treatment for arthritis, which was co-developed with Medarex , Inc. [ 37 ]
Remicade is a potent anti-inflammatory agent used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis and other inflammatory diseases. Remicade was the first TNF blocking agent successfully used in patients. [13]
