The Triumph Spitfire is a British sports car manufactured over five production iterations between 1962 and 1980. Styled for Standard - Triumph in 1957 by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti , the Spitfire was introduced at the London Motor Show in 1962. [ 5 ]
At the same time the front disc brakes were enlarged and the design of the rear suspension (one component not carried over unmodified from the Triumph Spitfire) received "attention". [4] The GT4S was joined by the 2-litre GT with a larger smoother body directly before the London Motor Show in October 1967. [5]
The Vitesse was also modified, but the Spitfire had to wait until 1971's Mk IV for any improvements to be made. There were other changes for the Mk II; the front bumper was raised (in common with the Spitfire Mk 3) to conform to new crash regulations, necessitating a revised front end, and side vents were added to the front wings and rear pillars.
Work Completed: Second-hand front suspension and front brakes from a Jaguar XJ installed by replacing the previous, badly installed Triumph Vitesse front suspension with modified chassis rails, shortened XJ subframe, and sway bar. Rusted metal front wings and bonnet replaced with one-piece fiberglass flip front panel.
The car's suspension was via double wishbones and coil springs front and rear. Although the wishbones and aluminum hub carriers were an original TVR design, many components on the cars were sourced from other manufacturers. The brakes, which were 11-inch discs at the front and 9-inch drums at the rear, came from the Triumph TR6.
The independent suspension used coil springs and dampers front and rear. The front suspension incorporated modified upper and lower wishbones of various Triumph cars: the TR4, TR6 Spitfire, and Herald. It featured an anti-roll bar, 9 inches (230 mm) disk brakes and 4×100mm PCD hubs. The rear suspension used trailing swingarms and drum brakes. [4]
