The Amarillo metropolitan statistical area is a metropolitan area in the Texas Panhandle that covers five counties: Armstrong, Carson, Potter, Randall, and Oldham. As of the 2020 census , the MSA had a population of 268,691.
Amarillo is served by two interstate highways: I-27 and I-40. Amarillo is also the northern terminus for I-27, of which less than one mile (~1.6 km) is located in Potter County. The highway terminates at the city's main west–east highway, Interstate 40, just north of the Potter–Randall county line.
In 1910, a trolley service was established between San Jacinto and downtown, operating until 1926. The neighborhood also had a newspaper, The Booster, established in 1925. [1] The neighborhood intersects with U.S, Route 66, and houses the U.S. Route 66-Sixth Street Historic District, which includes the Amarillo Natatorium inside San Jacinto. [2]
Because I-40 runs east–west and I-27/U.S. Route 87 run mostly north–south through Amarillo, Loop 335 can be divided into four sections: northeastern, southeastern, southwestern, and northwestern. The two junctions with I-40, the junction with I-27, and the junction with US 87/ US 287 are all grade-separated.
