The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University (abbr. TNMGRMU) is a government medical university situated in Guindy in the southern part of the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is about 7 km from the Chennai International Airport and about 13 km from the Chennai Central Railway Station .
The Government Headquarters Hospital near the Coimbatore Railway Junction is attached to the college and has been converted to a teaching medical institution. Since 1857, the college has been affiliated to the University of Madras and all degrees of Health Sciences were awarded by the same until 1988 when the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Act, 1987 received the assent of the president of India. [8] This affiliating university started functioning from July 1988 and is governed by the said Act.

The Govt. T.B. Hospital campus at Asaripallam, Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District was selected as the site for the proposed Government Medical College.
