The Stony Creek–Thimble Islands Historic District is a historic district encompassing a 19th-century summer resort area in Branford, Connecticut. Located in the southeastern part of the town, it encompasses the mainland Stony Creek neighborhood, and all of the major Thimble Islands which lie offshore from Stony Creek in Long Island Sound .
In 1823, Lemuel Taylor moved from New York state to settle on a 400-acre parcel of land at this location on Stony Creek. He built a dam and gristmill, which opened in 1824 and provided a base for a small community. By 1825, the village had a blacksmith, distillery, store, and post office. A hotel was built in the 1830s.
The Stony Creek Ponds are a set of three ponds totaling 190 acres near Coreys, New York. [1] They are the source of Stony Creek, a roughly three-mile river that feeds the Raquette River . The ponds are located at the south end of the Indian Carry , a historic portage from the south end of Upper Saranac Lake to points south. [ 2 ]
