Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is a graduate medical university in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [5] [6] It was established in 1965 as Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (IPGMR).
The university has 36 departments under a total of 8 faculties for teaching and research at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in marine fisheries, safe shipping management and administration, naval engineering and technology, oceanography, international maritime law, etc. However, only 5 departments are open for undergraduate level.
All medical colleges until 1986 were established by the government. Currently, there are 37 public medical colleges, these provide 5380 seats every year for students undertaking MBBS. While the 68 private medical colleges provide 6040 seats. 6 colleges are run by Bangladesh Armed Forces which offer 375 seats.
The total duration of training of the cadets is four years. Out of that 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year training is conducted in the academy to cover the theoretical aspects of professional and academic subjects. On completion of each year, they attend year final examination conducted by BSMRMU.
