Now known as the Ponce Municipal Band, the band continues to play every Sunday evening, though in different locations. On 12 May 1960, a new fire station was built nearby at the junction of Calle Mayor and Calle Cristina. [12] [13] This new structure became the main fire station for the city, reducing Parque de Bombas to a secondary role.
The station continued to serve the city of Ponce until 1990, ending its 108-year history as an active fire station. On that year, the station's fire-fighting duties were transferred to the more spacious fire station at Calle Cristina and Calle Mayor streets, and the building was officially converted into a fire-fighting museum.
Ponce's Parque de Bombas was Puerto Rico's first firehouse and today is a firefighting museum. Puerto Rico firefighters have their origins in the southern town of Ponce. In 1823, Spanish Governor Miguel De La Torre, became deeply concerned by a large fire that occurred in Ponce, on February 27, 1820. This fire almost destroyed the town.

The Woodburn Fire District took Ponce on as a volunteer as soon as he turned 18. Last year he was named a division chief with Portland Fire & Rescue.

The building as originally built was not only a fire station but also the former location of the Ponce regional headquarters of the Bomberos de Puerto Rico. A mosaic mural titled "La Abnegacion" (Selflessness) by Rafael Ríos Rey (now [2023] in ruins] commemorates the building's former use as a fire station. [14] The mural was built in 1960. [15]
