Manicouagan Reservoir (also Lake Manicouagan / m æ n ɪ k w ɑː ɡ ən,-ɡ ɒ̃ /; French: [manikwaɡɑ̃]) is an annular lake in central Quebec, Canada, covering an area of 1,942 km 2 (750 sq mi). The lake island in its centre is known as René-Levasseur Island , and its highest point is Mount Babel .
A huge hydroelectric power plant also creates employment opportunities. The area also contains an Innu reserve with a resident population of about 2,500 inhabitants. The Manicouagan population along the coastline has over time become almost exclusively French with the descendants of ancient Indigenous families living on the Pessamit reserve. [1]
With an area of 23,540 hectares, which makes it - by far - the largest of the entire Quebec network, the Louis-Babel Ecological Reserve occupies Mount Babel, in the northern part of the René-Levasseur Island (Manicouagan Reservoir). It is located in unorganized territory of the Regional County Municipality of Manicouagan.

The Petit Lac Manicouagan population was hunted in fall in the 1970s and 1980s, and in winter in the 1990s. The fall harvest decreased during the 1970s and 1980s. The harvest was much higher in the winter. [8] Some caribou herds have been in sharp decline, and as of 2017 it was not known whether the Petit lac Manicouagan herd still existed. [9]
René-Levasseur Island is a large island in the centre of Lake Manicouagan in Quebec, Canada. Its highest peak is Mount Babel, at 952 m (3,123 feet), which is contained in the Louis-Babel Ecological Reserve. With a total area of 2,020 km 2 (and a diameter of 50.7 km), the island is larger in area than the annular lake in which it is situated.

Mount Babel is the central peak of the Manicouagan impact structure and was formed by the rebound of the crust after the impact of a meteor 210 million years ago. The mountain and reservoir are of particular interest to geologists due to the shock metamorphosis it endured. [4]
