Active full-wave rectification with two MOSFETs and a center tap transformer. Replacing a diode with an actively controlled switching element such as a MOSFET is the heart of active rectification. MOSFETs have a constant very low resistance when conducting, known as on-resistance (R DS(on)). They can be made with an on-resistance as low as 10 ...
In the passive transformation (right), point P stays fixed, while the coordinate system rotates counterclockwise by an angle θ about its origin. The coordinates of P ′ after the active transformation relative to the original coordinate system are the same as the coordinates of P relative to the rotated coordinate system.
Passive cables are copper cables that do not have an electronic circuit, and are prone to data degradation. Passive cables are also typically bi-directional, while active cables that convert a signal usually only work in one direction. There are two main types of signal conditioning used in active electrical cables: re-driver-based and re-timer.
Fig. 1: Schematic of a flyback converter. The flyback converter is used in both AC/DC, and DC/DC conversion with galvanic isolation between the input and any outputs. The flyback converter is a buck-boost converter with the inductor split to form a transformer, so that the voltage ratios are multiplied with an additional advantage of isolation.
Illustration of the "reference directions" of the current (), voltage (), and power () variables used in the passive sign convention. If positive current is defined as flowing into the device terminal which is defined to be positive voltage, then positive power (big arrow) given by the equation = represents electric power flowing into the device, and negative power represents power flowing out.
The pressure transmitter modulates the current on the loop to send the signal to the strip chart recorder, but does not in itself supply power to the loop and so is passive. Another loop may contain two passive chart recorders, a passive pressure transmitter, and a 24 V battery (the battery is the active device).
A transducer is a device that converts energy from one form to another. Usually a transducer converts a signal in one form of energy to a signal in another. [1] Transducers are often employed at the boundaries of automation, measurement, and control systems, where electrical signals are converted to and from other physical quantities (energy, force, torque, light, motion, position, etc.).
In audio work one can also find both (incrementally) passive and active converters between balanced and unbalanced lines. A passive balun converter is generally just a transformer along with, of course, the requisite connectors, while an active one typically consists of a differential drive or an instrumentation amplifier.
