Lakshadweep is a Union Territory and is governed by an administrator on behalf of the Government of India. [ 49 ] [ 50 ] It was established in 1956 and constitutes a single Indian district . [ 29 ] [ 51 ] The headquarters of the union territory were at Kozhikode until 1964, when the seat of the administrator of the islands was shifted to Kavaratti.
The Lakshadweep islands were a part of the Madras Presidency under the British Raj and in accordance with the Indian Independence Act 1947, enacted by the British parliament, the islands were transferred to the new Union of India. Though the Madras Presidency had an overwhelming Hindu majority, the islands had a Muslim majority.
The Indian union territory of Lakshadweep has only one operational airport named Agatti Airport on the island of Agatti. Under the Government of India's UDAN scheme, the Agatti Airport is proposed to be expanded. Also, two water aerodromes at Minicoy and Kavaratti are proposed to be developed for tourism purposes. [1]
