Self Defense rounds are JHP with 'thinner' jackets for optimized expansion/penetration. The ones that pass the FBI standard are certainly favored, in 9mm, 3 inch barrel, I know the: Hornady XST Critical Defense and the Speer Gold Dot 124gr+P LE GDHP "for Short Barrel" have both passed the 4x 16 oz denim w 12-18in penetration standard.
The Remington 9mm 124gr seemed to work reasonably well, on my PM9. Ditto on the suggestions of some others (above): find what works best for your own specific gun, as often the load that'll work on yours will vary from the load that seems to work for many others who have the same gun. You never know what your particular one will like best.
Note that CorBon, Black Hills and some others have rounds that, at least in 115gr +P guise, have "better" ballistics than the RGS, but frankly 450 ft-lbs in a 9mm carry round is plenty, assuming you can manage the kick/rise/flame/smoke and it's reliable in your gun. In the Browning BDM 9mm, I've tried: Remington Golden Saber JHP 115gr +P and ...
1. Best 9mm ammo for carrying on you (pistol): DoubleTap JHP 124gr +P, assuming it functions perfectly in your gun. 2. Best 9mm ammo for carrying around the property (pistol or possibly a carbine rifle in pistol caliber): Same, since it's decently powered. Though, if shooting at anything farther than 30yds away, I'd want a rifle.
Hi there. I recently was given a Springfield EMP in 9mm for my birthday. (My husband rocks!) I'm carrying it every day, but can't find a defensive ammunition that will feed. I've tried Federal Hydrashok, Remington Gold Saber, and Winchester Ranger. All three of these rounds hang up on the bottom edge of the feed ramp.
All this makes the round 'a more reliable' self defense round. I've got two magazines of Pow'rball 9MM 100 grain rounds for my Sig P226, and a third magazine of 9MM Ranger and Talon 157 grain rounds for if the target is behind some obstacle, like car or wall. Between the two, I feel comfortable that I'm covered.
Carvin66. I carried either Hornady critical defense, or Federal personal defense classic 147gr. The 147gr in 9MM is not anywhere near the best SD load, but fed 100% and was extremely accurate out of my LC9. The Critical defense is top tier PD ammo, but I had 3 fail to fire out of 2 boxes and I no longer trust it.
I got to see a gen 4 Glock 26 today, and it was darn sexy. I had also been reading about how advanced 9 mm bullet/round technology has progressed recently. Practice ammo is about 65% the price of .45 ACP 230 gr FMJ. My girlfriend fired a 9mm this weekend and she loved it. It's the first centerfire pistol caliber she's enjoyed shooting (she has ...
It is my hiking 9mm ammo. It is not to be confused with Extreme Defender whicH is designed to limit penetration. Both bullets are solid so expansion will it slow them down. Both use fluid transfer to increase the wound channel. Penetrator is like have in ball ammo that makes a bigger hole. Penetrator is barrier blind.
