The Gibraltar Trade Center started as an outdoor market, and auction house on Woodruff Road along the southern limits of Gibraltar, Michigan (hence the name) in the 1970's. It, later, relocated to a permanent location, inside of a former Joshua Doore warehouse on Eureka Road in Taylor in 1980, fully occupying the site by 1982.

Partners Joseph Megdell and Wilbert Roberts opened their first store in 1948 to sell military surplus under the name U.S. Surplus. By 1964, it had become a discount chain with 21 stores throughout southeastern Michigan, primarily around Flint.

Northland Center was an enclosed shopping mall on an approximately 159-acre (64 ha) site located near the intersection of M-10 (the John C. Lodge Freeway) and Greenfield Road in Southfield, Michigan, an inner-ring suburb of Detroit, Michigan, United States. Construction began in 1952 and the mall opened on March 22, 1954.
