Gorgias (/ ˈɡɔːrdʒiəs / GOR-jee-əs; [1] Ancient Greek: Γοργίας; c. 483 BC – c. 375 BC) [2] was an ancient Greek sophist, pre-Socratic philosopher, and rhetorician who was a native of Leontinoi in Sicily. Several doxographers report that he was a pupil of Empedocles, although he would only have been a few years younger.
He features heavily in the Gorgias, a dialogue on the nature of rhetoric. Polus also appears in the Phaedrus and the Theages. Outside of Plato's work, he is also mentioned in Book 1 of Aristotle's Metaphysics. [2] Much of what is known about Polus comes from Plato's Gorgias.
