Somatotrophic adenomas have only been described in two dogs. [1] In 1996 a 9 year old male Doberman Pinscher with difficult to manage diabetes mellitus but no signs of acromegaly was euthanised. Necropsy later revealed an acidophilic adenoma with immunohistochemical staining for growth hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone , and prolactin . [ 6 ]
An important point of view is that recurrent pleomorphic adenomas may occur after a very long time from primary surgery, on average over 7–10 years but up to 24 years afterwards. Findings in male dogs include the presence of protein and glucose in the urine and the inability to concentrate urine, and progression to kidney failure by the age of 9 months and death by 16 months.
