Fowler attended American University from 1976 to 1977, but left school to become an announcer for the San Antonio Dodgers. In 1980, he became the weekend sports anchor at San Antonio's KSAT-TV, and quickly became the station's sports director. In 1984 he moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. [1]
Fowler was an animator for the 2003 short film Rockfish and the 2009 film Where the Wild Things Are. In 2004, he wrote, directed, storyboarded, did the art layout, and animated Gopher Broke. He also wrote and animated A Gentleman's Duel. Fowler worked on the CGI movie production for the 2005 video game Shadow the Hedgehog.

In 2005, Fowler met Richard File (UNKLE, We Fell to Earth) at a social gathering in LA while UNKLE were in town recording their 4th album War Stories. [2] [3] The pair decided to schedule a writing session after an initial conversation revealed they had very similar influences. That first session would mark the birth of We Fell to Earth.
