In international relations, power is defined in several different ways. [1] Material definitions of state power emphasize economic and military power. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Other definitions of power emphasize the ability to structure and constitute the nature of social relations between actors.
Power is one of the biggest reasons an individual feels the need to follow through with the suggestions of another. A person who possesses more authority (or is perceived as being more powerful) than others in a group is an icon or is most "popular" within a group. This person has the most influence over others.
In higher PDI cultures, the power relations are paternalistic and autocratic, and centralized authority exists; there is a wide gap or emotional distance which is perceived to exist among people at different levels of the hierarchy. There is considerable dependence (also known as counter-dependence) on individuals who hold power.
