Chrysler developed its first experimental hemi engine for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. The XIV-2220 was an inverted V16 rated at 2,500 hp (1,860 kW). The P-47 was already in production with a Pratt & Whitney radial engine when the XIV-2220 flew successfully in trials in 1945 as a possible upgrade, but the war was winding down and it did not go into production.
The Dodge versions were marketed as Red Ram or Super Red Ram ... (4.0 L; 3,954 cc) and was Plymouth's Poly version of the Dodge's 241 Hemi for 1955.

The Dodge lineup was positioned as the mainstream line in Chrysler's hierarchy, between DeSoto and Plymouth. The Coronet (and Suburban station wagon) was the base model. This was the only line to feature the 230 in 3 (3.8 L) Getaway I6 as well as the 270 in 3 (4.4 L) Red Ram V8. Coronets were available in all body styles except the convertible.
The DeSoto and Dodge 270/315/325 poly used similar head architecture but was not related to the Plymouth A Engine, using its own heads and the same bottom end as the Dodge and Desoto Red Ram Hemi. The A engine cylinder bore center distance is 4.46 in (113.3 mm), larger than the earlier Dodge-based poly engines.
