Male gorillas have weak social bonds, particularly in multiple-male groups with apparent dominance hierarchies and strong competition for mates. Males in all-male groups, though, tend to have friendly interactions and socialise through play, grooming, and staying together, [ 59 ] and occasionally they even engage in homosexual interactions. Western gorillas are long-lived and may survive for as long as 40 years in the wild. A group's home range may be as large as 30 km 2 (12 sq mi), but is not actively defended. Wild western gorillas are known to use tools. [10] Western gorillas' diets are high in fiber, including leaves, stems, fruit, piths, flowers, bark, invertebrates, and soil.
According to a 2004 report there were only about 5,000 eastern lowland gorillas in the wild, [3] down to fewer than 3,800 in 2016, [4] compared to over 100,000 western lowland gorillas. However, a survey in 2021 gave an estimate of up to 6,800 suggesting the decline was not as bad as feared although they are still facing severe threats. [ 5 ]
Typically, Old World monkeys (paleotropical) are larger than New World monkeys (neotropical); the reasons for this are not entirely understood but several hypotheses have been generated. [3] As a rule, primate brains are "significantly larger" than those of other mammals with similar body sizes. [4]
The western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is one of two Critically Endangered subspecies of the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) that lives in montane, primary and secondary forest and lowland swampland in central Africa in Angola (Cabinda Province), Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
The eastern lowland gorillas and mountain gorillas were previously thought to be two of the three subspecies of one single species, the gorilla (Gorilla gorilla). However, genetic research has shown that the two eastern subspecies are far more closely related than the western subspecies: the western lowland gorilla ( G. gorilla gorilla ), which ...
Scientists have documented what appear to be the first-ever lethal chimpanzee attacks against gorillas, according to a new study. Chimps documented attacking and killing gorillas in the wild for ...
Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelli) Hominoidea is a superfamily of primates. Members of this superfamily are called hominoids or apes, and include gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, gibbons, bonobos, and humans. Hominoidea is one of the six major groups in the order Primates. The majority are found in forests in Southeastern Asia and Equatorial Africa, with the exception of humans, which have ...
