Dental assistants can receive formal education through academic programs at community colleges, vocational schools, career colleges, technical institutes, universities and dental schools with most programs needing only 8 to 11 months to complete.
In 1995, Teresa Knox founded Dental Directions: The School of Dental Assisting. During its first year of business, Dental Directions graduated twelve students. [ 1 ] In 1996, the college initiated application for accreditation with the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

Carrington College offers 26 programs through five areas of focus including medicine, health studies, dentistry, administration, or veterinary medicine. Some of the programs include health care administration, pharmacy technology, practical nursing, criminal justice: corrections, veterinary assisting, and dental assisting. [10]
At several of the campus locations, the Dental Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Veterinary Assistant programs are also offered. In February 2021, Ross converted from a for-profit college to a Michigan nonstock nonprofit corporation and was classified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity .
