Looe (/ ˈ l uː /; Cornish: Logh, [1] lit. ' deep water inlet ') is a coastal town and civil parish in south-east Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, with a population of 5,280 at the 2011 census.
Downstream of the bridge, the only crossing of the river is Looe Bridge. [6] At the north side of the bridge, the road continues on a causeway over mudflats and saltings. [3] The East Looe River is tidal as far as Tregarland Bridge – a little over 1 mi (1.6 km) upstream of Terras Bridge – and so flooding of the causeway is not uncommon.
East Looe and West Looe was a short-lived parliamentary borough represented in the First and Second Parliament of the Protectorate between 1654 and 1658. The borough had been made by combining the boroughs of East Looe and West Looe, [1] which were reinstated in the Third Protectorate Parliament in 1659. The sole MP for the borough was John Buller.
The building was commissioned to replace the Old Guildhall in High Market Street which dated from around 1450. [2] The new building was designed by John Ford Gould of Barnstaple in the Gothic Revival style, built by Samuel Honey of West Looe in rubble masonry with ashlar stone dressings and was officially opened on 13 September 1877.
