Vasectomy is an elective surgical procedure that results in male sterilization, often as a means of permanent contraception.During the procedure, the male vasa deferentia are cut and tied or sealed so as to prevent sperm from entering into the urethra and thereby prevent fertilization of a female through sexual intercourse.
Sterilization procedures are intended to be permanent; reversal is generally difficult. There are multiple ways of having sterilization done, but the two that are used most frequently are tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men. There are many different ways tubal sterilization can be accomplished.
The reversal procedure is also much more complicated than the procedure itself. It’s costly, and the results aren’t always guaranteed, meaning conceiving a child afterward can be a struggle.
ADAM is a hydrogel-based male contraceptive implant in early clinical development [151] by Contraline, Inc. [152] The implant is administered to a user in a procedure similar to a no-scalpel vasectomy, and is proposed to provide protection from pregnancy for approximately two years, after which the hydrogel degrades, thereby restoring fertility.
A vasectomy or tubal ligation would be examples of this procedure for male and female individuals respectively. [8] [9] Reproductive surgeons can potentially perform a reverse vasectomy to restore male reproductive function following the vasectomy. Individuals may choose to reverse the procedure due to pain experience after the surgery. [9]
IUI success rates depend on elements like sperm quality, timing of the procedure and age of the people involved, Wright says. However, success rates are usually quoted between 5% and 15% per cycle.
