Thanks to the large number of rifles based on the .30-06 family of cartridges, having a .338-06 made usually only requires a simple barrel change by a competent gun smith. Since the 1960's a relatively obsure cartridge only known to handloaders and "Wildcatters", eventually A-Square adopted the caliber as the .338-06 A-Square in approximately 1998.
Care must be taken to confirm what twist rate was used, as the earlier West German 7mm Weatherbys used a 1-in-12 twist vs the faster 1-in-10 twist for those of later manufacture. The 1x12 twist rifles will not stabilize bullets over 150 grains, while the 1x10 twist rifles will stabilize bullets weighing up to 175 grains.
Components of a modern bottleneck rifle cartridge. Top-to-bottom: Copper-jacketed bullet, smokeless powder granules, rimless brass case, Boxer primer.. Handloading, or reloading, is the practice of making firearm cartridges by manually assembling the individual components (metallic/polymer case, primer, propellant and projectile), rather than purchasing mass-assembled, factory-loaded ...
One outcome from this transition to using measurement transducers is, for example, that a Speer reloading manual from 1987 lists all SAAMI pressures in CUP, while current references list nearly all pressures in PSI. Another outcome is that design margins are now better determined, which has the effect of increasing the long-term safety of ...
The table above shows typical muzzle velocities available in commercial 30-06 loads along with the maximum .30-06 muzzle velocities reported by several reloading manuals for common bullet weights. Hodgdon, Nosler, and Barnes report velocities for 24 inches (610 mm) barrels. Hornady and Speer report velocities for 22 inches (560 mm) barrels.
Historically, Weatherby claimed that this is the most powerful .30 caliber magnum rifle commercially available, but the recently introduced .300 Remington Ultra Magnum, the .300 Norma Magnum and Weatherby's own .30-378 Weatherby Magnum are now more powerful.
Speer Bullets offers a 130 gr (8.42 gr), copper-jacketed soft-point flat-nosed bullet for use in lever-action rifles. It has a sectional density of 0.23 and a ballistic coefficient of 0.257 [ 7 ] Hornady Manufacturing Company now offers a 120 grain FTX bullet in 7mm/.284" caliber.
Reloading the .460 Weatherby Magnum is no more difficult than reloading any other belted magnum cartridges. The reloader has a wide variety of components, bullets and powders available. Among bullet manufacturers Barnes, Hornady and Lyman provide reloading data in their manuals for the .460 Weatherby Magnum.
