From 1987 to 2014 the congregation met in local school halls, most recently Coppice Primary School. At Easter 2014 the new St Mary's Church was opened on Shawhurst Lane in Hollywood, on the Coppice School site. The Proto-Cathedral of St. Mary [1] or Proto-Cathedral of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church is a parish church and proto-cathedral of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix, serving the Ruthenian Eastern Catholic population of Los Angeles, California, United States. It was the first Byzantine church in California.

The church began as a mission in St. Mary's parish in 1925 and in 1945 moved to its present site, renamed “The Mission of Nuestra Senora de los Dolores". In 1946, the Canonnesses of St. Augustine (later named the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) came from Belgium to open the first Catholic school in the neighborhood in 1952.
In 2001, the Holy Synod of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church requested that Pope John Paul II establish a jurisdiction for Syro-Malankara parishes in the United States, which had each been functioning under the direction of the local Latin Church bishops, and requested the appointment of a proper Ordinary of the church sui iuris.
