Columbus is a city in and the county seat of Colorado County in southeastern Texas, United States. The population was 3,699 as of the 2020 census. [4] It is located on the Colorado River. The area was known by several different names (Lipan School, Little School, and Murray's Store) after it was settled in the mid-1880s. The community was named Wall after James Madison Wall Sr., a shopkeeper who served as postmaster after the town's post office opened in 1906. Wall served as a trading center for the fertile Lipan Flat region.
It originally comprised an area over 60,000 sq mi (160,000 km 2). The original county seat was the town of Ben Ficklin. In 1882, flood waters of the Concho River destroyed the town and drowned 65 people. The county seat was moved to Santa Angela. In 1883, the town's name was officially changed to San Angelo by the United States Post Office.
