The double horn in F/B ♭ (technically a variety of German horn) is the horn most often used by players in professional orchestras and bands, although the descant and triple horn have become increasingly popular.
However, horns that can reproduce the human voice adequately must be several feet long, so to make the speaker more compact "folded horns" are often used, in which the sound path is bent into a zigzag shape by reflections. Developed in the 1940s, a reflex speaker is a type of folded horn in which the sound path is a series of concentric ducts.
In the mid-seventeenth century, what was known as a hunter's horn underwent a transformation into an "art instrument" consisting of a lengthened tube, a narrower bore, a wider bell, and a much wider range.
