Areography, also known as the geography of Mars, is a subfield of planetary science that entails the delineation and characterization of regions on Mars. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Areography is mainly focused on what is called physical geography on Earth; that is the distribution of physical features across Mars and their cartographic representations.
Generalised geological map of Mars [1] Mars as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. The geology of Mars is the scientific study of the surface, crust, and interior of the planet Mars. It emphasizes the composition, structure, history, and physical processes that shape the planet. It is analogous to the field of terrestrial geology.
The maps below were produced by the Mars Global Surveyor ' s Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter; redder colors indicate higher elevations. The maps of the equatorial quadrangles use a Mercator projection, while those of the mid-latitude quadrangles use a Lambert conformal conic projection, and the maps of the polar quadrangles use a polar stereographic projection.
Such geographic atlases (in this case: areographic) do not focus on one theme, but landforms made by all physical geologic processes are visually presented in equal emphasis. The Mars 36 Atlas follows the official MC quadrangle scheme; [1] subsequent editions show map pages centered on geographic features.
Geysers on Mars – Putative CO2 gas and dust eruptions on Mars; Glacier – Persistent body of ice that moves downhill under its own weight; Glaciers on Mars – Extraterrestrial bodies of ice; Groundwater on Mars – Water held in permeable ground; Ismenius Lacus quadrangle – Map of Mars; Lineated valley fill – Martian geologic feature
Scientists have announced the discovery of structures like layering and potential impact craters which had been hidden under Mars’ polar ice caps. New 3-D map of Mars' ice caps reveal hidden ...
The Mare Acidalium quadrangle is one of a series of 30 quadrangle maps of Mars used by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Research Program. The quadrangle is located in the northeastern portion of Mars' western hemisphere and covers 300° to 360° east longitude (0° to 60° west longitude) and 30° to 65° north latitude.
The Lunae Palus quadrangle is one of a series of 30 quadrangle maps of Mars used by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Research Program. The quadrangle is also referred to as MC-10 (Mars Chart-10). [1] Lunae Planum and parts of Xanthe Terra and Chryse Planitia are found in the Lunae Palus quadrangle. The Lunae Palus ...
