Startpage isn't a virus. However, there is a virus going around that manipulates Startpage. Startpage is a very secure and safe search engine. Run a virus scanner (I love Malwarebytes. Couldn't hurt to run Spybot as well). Startpage is fine. Your computer is infected, but not from Startpage.

Startpage support recommended me doing that. I know that I can install the Startpage search to Firefox and it worked. But I can't combine it with the custom settings. So I uninstalled the extension, deleted the search engine and went to my custom startpage.com URL. Right-clicking the URL bar allowed me to add the search engine from there.

I have been using Startpage as my default search engine for some time now. But in the past couple of weeks it takes very long to display results or even appears to hang. When this happens, the Startpage FF add-on switches to the generic Startpage format. I have raised this issue with Startpage, but they have no knowledge of such a problem.
