A metamodel is a model whose instances are models. [1] A GenVoca model of a product line is a tuple whose components are features (0-ary or 1-ary functions). An extension (a.k.a. delta or refinement) of a model is a "meta-feature", which is a tuple of deltas that can modify an existing product line by modifying existing features and adding new features.
A model conforms to its metamodel in the way that a computer program conforms to the grammar of the programming language in which it is written. MOF is designed as a four-layered architecture. It provides a meta-meta model at the top layer, called the M3 layer. This M3-model is the language used by MOF to build metamodels, called M2-models.
