Need for expansion led to the Sisters of Mercy opening a 50-bed Mercy Hospital facility in Janesville in 1913, which eventually grew through renovation into a 150-bed facility by 1920.

Mercy Health Fairfield was originally constructed to support 150-beds. Expansions in the mid-eighties, mid-nineties and 2005 added services and expanded in-patient beds to 220. In 2022, the hospital presented plans to the Fairfield City Council and Planning Commission to expand by adding a 30,000-square-foot single-story medical office building.
