Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site, also known as Erie Canal National Historic Landmark, is a historic district that includes the ruins of the Erie Canal aqueduct over Schoharie Creek, and a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) long part of the Erie Canal, in the towns of Glen and Florida within Montgomery County, New York.
The Croton Aqueduct or Old Croton Aqueduct was a large and complex water distribution system constructed for New York City between 1837 and 1842. The great aqueducts , which were among the first in the United States , carried water by gravity 41 miles (66 km) from the Croton River in Westchester County to reservoirs in Manhattan .
The bridge, composed of stone abutments and a timber deck, was demolished in 1917. The oldest crossing still standing is High Bridge, built in 1848 to carry the Croton Aqueduct from Manhattan to the Bronx over the Harlem River. [6] This bridge was built to carry water to the city as part of the Croton Aqueduct system.
