Modern dictionaries agree on prick as a euphemism for 'penis'. But they offer some slight variations in the use of prick as an insult. The Concise New Partridge Dictionary of Slang says a prick is "a despicable man, a fool, used as a general term of offence or contempt. Often as an abusive form of address, always of a male or an inanimate object."
Prick Up Your Ears is a 1987 British film, directed by Stephen Frears, about the playwright Joe Orton and his lover Kenneth Halliwell. The screenplay was written by Alan Bennett, based on the 1978 biography by John Lahr. The film stars Gary Oldman as Orton, Alfred Molina as Halliwell, Wallace Shawn as Lahr, and Vanessa Redgrave as Peggy Ramsay.
"Prick Up Your Ears" was to be the title of an unreleased play by Orton; Ironically, Halliwell, who had provided many of Orton's titles throughout his successful years, suggested the title. In the title, the word "Ears" is an anagram of the word "Arse" making Prick Up Your Ears a rather blunt reference to the homosexual subject matter.

Oldman and Frears worked together two years later on Prick Up Your Ears. The film marked the first time Oliver Stapleton was in charge of cinematography in one of Frears's projects. He later became one of the director's consistent collaborators. The film was made around Wandsworth, Battersea and Vauxhall, all districts of South London.
