William H. Mumler (1832–1884) was an American spirit photographer who worked in New York City and Boston. [1] His first spirit photograph was apparently an accident—a self-portrait which, when developed, also revealed the "spirit" of his deceased cousin.

He photographed Boston from a hot-air balloon at 1,200 feet (370 m), taking 8 plates of glass negative measuring 10 + 1 ⁄ 16 by 7 + 15 ⁄ 16 inches (256 mm × 202 mm). One good print resulted, which the photographer entitled Boston, as the Eagle and the Wild Goose See It. This was the first clear aerial image of a city.
