Co-operative Bank Rwanda or Rwanda Co-operative Bank is a proposed commercial bank in Rwanda. It is expected to broaden "financial inclusion" in the country, working through the Umurenge Saccos and increasing financial services in rural areas.
The bank was established in 1966, initially as a cooperative society. The banking license was granted in 1968. The Kenya Government directed all cooperative societies in the country to transfer their deposits to the Co-operative Bank of Kenya and that all cooperatives buy the bank's shares.
Until 2017, the Co-operative Group included The Co-operative Bank; however, despite its name, the Co-operative Bank was not itself a true co-operative as it was not owned directly by its members. Instead it was part-owned by a holding company which was itself a co-operative – the Co-operative Banking Group. [5]
