Death is an American musical group formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1971 by brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (March 19, 1952 – October 9, 2000) (guitar), and Dannis Hackney (drums, percussion). The trio initially started as a funk group but quickly switched their style to rock after seeing concerts by the Who and Alice Cooper .
In August 2015, after having played with the band for 45 years, drummer Mark Ellen retired and was replaced by Howard Tibble. In 2018, Graham Walker, from Gary Moore Band, took over on drums. Vanity Fare are still performing today, with the line-up of Hagley, Wheeler, Walker, and Steve Oakman. Wheeler and Hagley have taken up lead vocal duties.

Basically and Strange Times in 1985 and 1986, respectively, before abruptly breaking up in 1987 due to internal tensions and the sudden death of the band's manager. After the break-up, Burgess and Lever formed the Sun and the Moon, while Fielding and Smithies formed the Reegs. Burgess also had a short solo career with backing band the Sons of God.
