In 1957, the firm expanded into the hotel industry by opening the first Marriott hotel, the Marriott Motor Hotel, in Arlington County, Virginia. In 1964, Hot Shoppes, Inc. was renamed Marriott-Hot Shoppes, Inc. [7] The company became Marriott Corporation in 1967. In 1967, Marriott acquired the Big Boy family restaurants chain from Bob Wian. In 1999, after CP Hotels acquired the Fairmont brand, six CP properties rebranded to supplement the existing 24 Delta ones, and the Delta chain became a wholly-owned subsidiary of CP Hotel's two-thirds-owned Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. [13] In terms of classification, Fairmont was four-star and Delta was a three-star.
Design Hotels was founded in 1993 as a California Corporation, Design Hotels Inc. by J. Peter Schweitzer and Claus Sendlinger. Claus was a part-owner (with Hans Peter Knodler and Oliver Jamitzky) of German full-service travel agency CO-ORDINATES GmbH, based in Augsburg.
